Key takeaways

  • Parent PLUS loans on their own aren't eligible for income-driven plans. Consolidation is what opens that door.
  • Parent PLUS loans consolidated by July 1, 2026 could use ICR, and after at least one ICR payment, move to IBR.
  • Parent PLUS loans taken out or consolidated after July 1, 2026 only have Tiered Standard: no income-driven plan and no PSLF.
  • Parent PLUS loans are never eligible for RAP, and they can't be transferred to your child.

You borrowed so your kid could go to college. Now the payment is due, maybe on top of your own retirement savings, and the rules for Parent PLUS loans just changed.

Parent PLUS loans have always had fewer repayment options than student loans. Since July 1, 2026, the date the loan was taken out or consolidated decides almost everything. Here's how it works.

Why Parent PLUS loans have fewer options

A Parent PLUS loanA federal Direct PLUS Loan that a parent takes out to help pay for a dependent child's college. is in your name, not your child's. StudentAid.gov is clear that it can't be transferred to the student.

And on its own, a Parent PLUS loan isn't eligible for any income-driven repayment (IDR)A federal repayment plan that sets your monthly payment from your income and family size, not from how much you owe. plan. That's the core difference from your child's own federal loans.

We call this the July 2026 line: one date that splits Parent PLUS borrowers into two very different sets of options.

July 1, 2026The date that decides your Parent PLUS options
9.07%Fixed rate on Parent PLUS loans first disbursed July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027
NeverParent PLUS loans on RAP, even after consolidation

Before or after July 1, 2026: which side are you on?

Consolidated by July 1, 2026 Taken out or consolidated after July 1, 2026
Income-driven plan ICR, and after at least one ICR payment, IBR None
Fixed plan Standard, Graduated or Extended, if no loans were disbursed on or after July 1, 2026 Tiered Standard
PSLF Still possible if every PSLF requirement is met Not available
RAP Never Never

A few details matter here:

  • ICR is closing. ICR ends no later than July 1, 2028. Parents who used it as the path to IBR should know where they stand before then.
  • Unconsolidated Parent PLUS loans from before July 1, 2026 can use the fixed plans listed above, but not an income-driven plan.
  • Mixing in a new loan disbursed on or after July 1, 2026 can change which fixed plans are available.

While your child is still in school

You can ask for a deferment while your child is enrolled at least half time, and for six months after they leave school or drop below half time. Interest is charged during the deferment. You can pay it as you go, or let it be added to the principal when payments start.

That can make sense for a family with a tight budget during the college years. It also means the balance can be larger when repayment starts.

A short hypothetical

This is a hypothetical example, not a quote or a typical result.

Denise took out Parent PLUS loans for her son in 2022 and 2023. She consolidated them in spring 2026, in time for the July 1 line, and started on ICR. Under the rules on StudentAid.gov, after at least one ICR payment, she could look at moving to IBR. Her neighbor took out a new Parent PLUS loan in August 2026. That loan only has Tiered Standard.

Why people get help with this

Parent PLUS rules are some of the most confusing in federal student aid, and they changed this year.

  • Loan dates decide everything. Disbursement and consolidation dates have to be read off your loan file.
  • The ICR-to-IBR step has an order to it, and ICR is closing.
  • New loans can change old options. Borrowing again for a younger child can affect which plans fit.
  • Your retirement and their tuition. Many parents are juggling both at once.

Is a call a good fit for you?

This is most useful if…

  • You have Parent PLUS loans for a child's college
  • You're not sure whether your loans were consolidated, or when
  • You're on ICR, or thinking about it, and want to know about IBR
  • You're borrowing again for a younger child

Probably not for you if…

  • All of your loans are private
  • You're happy with a fixed payment and just want to pay it as scheduled
